INNOWATECH is aimed at investigating, assessing and enhancing the potentiality of promising technological options (i.e., technologies, processes and concepts) for the treatment of industrial wastewater with the specific aim to provide tailor-made solutions to end-users for a wide range of wastewaters. Such solutions will be essentially based on the integration of the investigated options and on technological improvements with respect to treatment system components, operation and control. The project’s objectives are
Investigating and enhancing the performances of promising industrial wastewater treatment options such as aerobic granulation, advanced oxidation processes combined with biological treatments, membrane contactors, membrane chemical reactors
Achieving fundamental and technological knowledge advancements
Assessing the economic and environmental sustainability of the investigated technological options
Developing integrated tailor-made solutions for end-users operating in different industrial sectors and favoring their actual implementation for enhancing the EU Water Industry competitiveness
Transferring the developed know-how to potential stakeholders and end-users inside and outside the project
In order to achieve such objectives, coordinated research activities will be carried out on selected options treating different wastewaters. The experiences from such parallel activities will be merged to define tailor-made solutions for end-users in different industrial sectors. A major goal, in fact will be the definition of treatment needs and framework conditions for a wide range of wastewaters based on the particular features of the options investigated. It might turn out that single processes have potential applications in areas which have not been investigated in the project and that even a combination of several of the considered options might be feasible in some industries. The investigated options (aerobic granular sludge systems, Advanced Oxidation Processes integrated or combined with biological processes, membrane contactors, membrane chemical reactors) have been selected on the basis of their promising potentiality for treating wastewaters whose features are common to many and vast industrial sectors and/or because of their innovative treatment-concept. Identification of appropriate wastewater treatment solutions for end users will be proposed by means of assessment tools (e.g. life cycle assessment and costing as well as integrated pollution prevention) and transferred to potential end users and stakeholders inside and outside the project through an appropriate dissemination strategy. The project results will be relevant to the specific work program as well as to other European initiatives or directives such as ETAP, ERA, IPPC, WFD, WSSTP.Coordination between INNOWATECH and NEPTUNE projectsIn the same call of Innowatech the project NEPTUNE(New sustainable concepts and processes for optimization and upgrading municipal wastewater and sludge treatment) has been approved. This project is really complementary to Innowatech as it deals with new concepts for treating municipal wastewater and sludge.
Since dissemination and public access of the gained knowledge is one of the main goals of both projects, a number of activities such as: ·knowledge transfer ·results dissemination ·stakeholders and end-users involvement ·life cycle assessment of the investigated technologies will be jointly planned, coordinated and carried out.
